Telling Your Story:
A Workshop in Memoir & Personal Narrative Joyce Maynard
Over the course of the week, Joyce will work with memoir students interested in pursuing the longer, book-length form of memoir as well as the short personal essay. Students participating in the workshop should submit an essay of 2500 words or less, or an excerpt of the same length from a longer piece of work in progress. Those who have not embarked on a project, but seek guidance on how to begin a memoir, or to craft a piece of personal narrative, are also welcome to attend and participate in the workshop - with the request that they submit a letter describing the nature of the story or project they are interested in developing.
Topics to be addressed over the week include locating your story, voice, structure, point of view, and the discipline of writing. Participants are asked to familiarize themselves in advance with the work of each participant in the group. Each student will receive personal workshop attention for his or her manuscript in ways that will be instructive for every writer attending.
