Daniel
Laufer is the Associate Principal Cellist of the Atlanta Symphony
Orchestra since 1991. Born in Israel, Mr. Laufer started playing
the cello at age eleven, studying with his father, Wolfgang
Laufer, cellist of the Fine Arts Quartet. From 1984-86, Mr.
Laufer attended the North Carolina School of the Arts where
he studied with Robert Marsh. While attending the School of
the Arts, Daniel performed as a soloist and chamber musician
on two European tours with the International Music Program.
During the same period, Daniel also attended the New York
String Orchestra Seminar with Sasha Schneider. He returned
to the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee to continue his
studies with his father and mother. At age 19, Mr. Laufer
joined the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Following two years
with the DSO, he joined the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra as
Associate Principal Cellist.
Mr. Laufer has given recitals in
Milwaukee, Madison, Dallas, Boston, and Atlanta as well as live recitals for radio
on WFMT in Chicago. He was a recipient of the 1 st Prize of the Young Artists
Competition of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. Daniel has performed at summer
music festivals such as the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, the Kfar Blum Chamber
Music Festival in Israel, the SMU Conservatory Chamber Music Festival in Taos,
the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival, the Barge Chamber Music Series in New
York City, as well as the Colorado Music Festival where he is Principal Cello
of the orchestra and has played chamber music concerts since the summer of 2004.
In
1991, Mr. Laufer and his father performed and recorded with the Milwaukee Symphony
Orchestra by David Ott on the Koss label. Mr. Laufer has also performed as soloist
with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra , the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and other
community and university orchestras in Georgia and Wisconsin. Daniel performs regularly with chamber music ensembles in and outside of Atlanta.
He was a founding member of the Emory Chamber Music Society of Atlanta and has
collaborated with musicians in chamber music such as Yo-Yo Ma, Sadao Harada, Robert
Spano, and Alan Gilbert, among others. Mr. Laufer has also performed on a number
of occasions with the Fine Arts Quartet and their guests, including Pinchas Zuckerman.
