Nancy Stagnitta
Flute

Flutist Nancy Stagnitta is Instructor of Flute at Interlochen Arts Academy and Camp. She also performs in Washington, D.C. with the National Philharmonic and the National Gallery Orchestra, and appeared as concerto soloist with the latter in June 2005. The Baltimore Sun states that she plays with "brilliance and beauty of tone." She is principal flutist with the Traverse Symphony Orchestra, and is often called upon to perform on the piccolo with the Sarasota and Baltimore Opera Orchestras as well as the Key West Symphony. She was appointed by the United States information Agency as Artistic Ambassador to southern Africa, where she presented recitals and master classes in Angola, Botswana, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique and Namibia. A two-time recipient of the Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award, she appeared as both classical soloist and featured jazz artist at the 2002 National Flute Convention, and performed again at the 2005 Convention in San Diego. She has recently presented masterclasses and performances at the University of Arizona, Bowling Green State University, Oklahoma State University and at the Flute Festival Mid-South in Memphis, TN, and she will also present a seminar at the Texas Music Educators Association Conference in San Antonio in February.

Ms. Stagnitta has performed with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and the Washington Contemporary Music Forum in Washington, D.C. A Baltimore Symphony ArtsExcel Visiting Artist, she also appeared as soloist with the Hudson Valley Philharmonic after winning that orchestra's Virtuoso-in-Progress Concerto Competition in her native state of New York. She was a semi-finalist in the National Flute Association Young Artist Competition, and has been heard in performance on NPR's WETA in Washington, D.C., WBJC in Baltimore, MD, WRMC in Middlebury, VT and on Interlochen Public Radio.

Equally active in the realm of jazz, Ms. Stagnitta has been featured as a jazz flutist in Maryland Musician magazine, and was selected as a finalist for the U.S. Information Agency/Kennedy Center Jazz Ambassador program for two consecutive years. NPR describes her CD entitled "Joy of My Life" as "bringing forth beauty that leaves one breathless."

Ms. Stagnitta has also served as Adjunct Professor of Flute at Wilkes University and Instructor of Flute at The Waldorf School of Baltimore. She earned the degrees of Master and Bachelor of Music from the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University, where she received the Ashworth Prize. Her teachers include Robert Willoughby, Timothy Day and Mark Sparks.
