Faculty Biographies - Norma Newton  

Norma Newton
Voice

Norma Newton has emerged as one of the leading singing teachers in the world. During her own singing career, Miss Newton shared the stage in leading roles with the finest singers of her generation, including Beverly Sills, Placido Domingo, Norman Treigle, Regina Resnik, and James King, at New York City Opera, Hamburg Opera, Welsh National Opera, Stuttgart Staatsoper, Dallas Opera, and many more. Her singing students include such artists as Susanne Mentzer, Barbara Bonney, Laura Claycomb, Brett Polegato, Jessica Jones, and a host of other gifted singers.

 

Miss Newton is a Professor of Voice at Hunter College, the Graduate Center of City University of New York (CUNY), and Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ. In addition, she has a full-time private studio in New York City. She has been on the faculties of Rice University, University of Texas- Austin, Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., Academy of Vocal Arts, Philadelphia, and the Houston Opera Studio. She is also affiliated with Glimmerglass Opera.

 

Miss Newton frequently adjudicates for the National Association of Teachers of Singing, the Metropolitan Opera, and has given Master Classes for the Voice Foundation, Toronto Opera. She was on the faculty of the American Institute of Musical Studies for ten years as a founding member. 2006 marks her third season at the Amalfi Coast Music Festival & Institute.
