Michael Miraw
Voice

Baritone Michael Meraw is a recent and welcome addition to the Voice Area. Mr. Meraw made his professional operatic debut with Pacific Opera Victoria as Harlekin in Ariadne auf Naxos, and since that time has sung with opera companies in Canada and the United States such as Toronto Opera in Concert, Opera Atelier, Missausauga Opera, Opera York, Edmonton Opera, Pacific Opera Victoria, Virginia Opera, Seattle Opera, the Ashlawn-Highland Summer Festival, and the Des Moines Metro Opera. His eclectic and wide ranging repertoire spans from Handel’s Garibaldo and Mozart’s Count, to Strauss’ Harlekin and Szymynowski’s King Roger. Michael is also an active performer and advocate of new works by such composers as Adamo, Estacio, Stanley, Jones and Babukis.

Mr. Meraw continues to be a sought-after presence on concert and recital platforms; singing for such ensembles as the Thirteen Strings of Ottawa, the Ottawa Chorale Society, the Victoria Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, the Regina Symphony, Edmonton’s Richard Eaton Singers, the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, and Pro Coro Canada. His repertoire includes the Requiem’s of Faure and Brahms, Bach’s St. John Passion, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, Handel’s Messiah and Israel in Egypt, The Sea Symphony and Five Mystical Songs of Vaughan Williams, Orff’s Carmina Burana, and Mendelssohn’s Elijah as well as the Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen of Mahler and the Songs and Dances of Death of Moussorgsky. His recital repertoire includes works from all periods in English, French, Italian, German, and Russian.

Michael began his musical studies early as an instrumentalist, playing the double bass and French horn for over fifteen years. After beginning his voice studies in Edmonton with Eva Bostrand he moved to Montreal to undertake a bachelor’s degree in Early Music Performance with the renowned counter-tenor Alan Fast. Mr. Meraw went on to receive a Masters in Voice Performance from McGill University working with Professor William Neill and coaching extensively with Professor Dixie Ross-Neill. He now continues his studies with such renowned singers and coaches as Mark Pedrotti, Dr. Robert K. Evans, and Robin Wheeler.

In his studio Mr. Meraw aims to build a technique which is specific to each singer. His teaching philosophy aims to establish a unique technical basis for each performer to conquer their particular vocal challenges. Michael helps his students discover their own sound while providing them with the structure and tools to use their voices in the service of the music. Being an active member of the singing community, Michael is aware of the present-day demands on singers and with that in mind he seeks to arm his students with a the right skills to succeed; and more, to become their own best teachers. Mr. Meraw is also the teacher of Vocal Styles and Conventions and also French and Italian Diction at McGill, which he learned from his mentor, the linguist and the linguist and coach Dr. Robert K. Evans.
