Faculty Biographies - Michele Campanella

Michele Campanella
Piano

Internationally recognized as one of the foremost virtuosos and interpreters of Franz Liszt throughout more than thirty years, Michele Campanella has figured prominently on the principal pages of piano literature. He was awarded the Gran Prix du Disque by the Franz Liszt Academy of Budapest in 1976, 1977 and again in 1998. The most recent award was in recognition of his recording, Franz Liszt - The Great Transcriptions, 1-11, produced by Philips.

Campanella has also received widespread critical acclaim for his recent important recordings of the complete works of the Beethoven and Mozart concertos and the complete production of the Brahms Variations.

As a result of his training with the Neapolitan piano school, under the tutelage of Vincenzo Vitale, Michele Campanella is known as an artist of extraordinary versatility. He is equally fluent with a widely disparate range of composers such as Clementi, Weber, Busoni (1980 Critics Award of Italian discography for his recording with Fonit Cetra ), and Rossini.

His discography includes recordings for such labels as Emi (Ravel), Philips (Liszt, Saint-Sains), Fone (Chopin), PYE (Liszt, Tchaikowsky), Fonit Cetra (Busoni), Nuova Era (Tchaikowksy, Liszt, Musorgski, Balakirev) and Musikstrasse (Rossini)

Campanella has played with the most important orchestras in Europe and the United States, under the baton of conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Gianluigi Gelmetti, Eliahu Inbal, Charles Mackerras, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti, Georges Pritre, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Thomas Schippers, Hubert Soudant, and Christian Thielmann.

Campanella is frequently invited to perform in countries around the world including Australia, Russia, Great Britain, China, and Brazil. In addition, he is a frequent guest artist at international music festivals such as Lucerne, Vienna, Berlin, Prague, Taormina, Turin, and the Pesaro Rossini Opera Festival.

Salvatore Accardo and Rocco Fillipini favor Campanella as the ideal partner to tackle the major masterpieces of chamber music.

Campanella is equally well known as a teacher: he is a tenured faculty member in the piano department of the Siena conservatory, the Accademia Chigiana. He is also valued for his annual master classes given at the world renowned Villa Rufolo in Ravello.

Most recently, Campanella was singled out to receive the prestigious prize of the Fondazione Premio Napoli.
