Faculty Biographies - Chris Thompson

Chris Thompson
Voice

Chris Thompson, baritone, has been hailed “as a lyric baritone possessing a rare combination of velvet tone, comic timing, and elegant stage deportment.”  He divides his time between several performance mediums including opera, operetta, oratorio, recitals, and musical theatre in a variety of capacities: soloist, conductor, music director/pianist, and stage director.  He has performed leading lyric baritone roles across the United States and England ranging from Figaro in Il Barbiere di Siviglia to Elijah in staged productions of Elijah.

Chris is also a frequent oratorio soloist whose most recent performances include Handel’s Messiah with Spire Chamber Ensemble, Saint-Saëns’ Christmas Oratorio with Springfield Regional Opera, and Bach’s Cantata 140 with the Mid-America Singers.  An accomplished recitalist, he has performed throughout the United States and has sung Schubert’s Winterreise on numerous occasions with pianist Steven Spooner.

A strong advocate of new music, Chris makes his Carnegie Hall debut with pianist Steven Spooner in January 2012 with Posh, a newly-commissioned song cycle by composer Mohammed Fairouz and soon to be recorded by Naxos.  He has appeared in several world premieres including Guest from the Future, The Scrimshaw Violin, Box and Cox and Hester Prynne at Death.  In addition, Chris made his Off-Broadway debut in Fermat’s Last Tango (Original Cast Recordings) and is a featured soloist on Impetuosities (Albany Records), a CD of music by New York composer Joshua Rosenblum.

Chris is a graduate of the University of Kansas, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (London), Loyola University (New Orleans), and Kansas State University.  He served as Voice Area Coordinator and Director of Opera/Musical Theatre at the University of Idaho and presently serves as Coordinator of Vocal Studies at Missouri State University.
